Free Repair Workshop at La Manivelle in Lausanne

Avatar: La Manivelle Lausanne La Manivelle Lausanne

Summary: La Manivelle Lausanne wishes to open a free repair workshop for the residents of Lausanne. For two hours a week, a qualified person will guide participants in repairing the broken items they have brought in.

La Manivelle Lausanne is the first object library to open in the canton of Vaud. Through a monthly or annual subscription, it gives everyone free and unlimited access to more than 600 objects. Items such as a raclette grill, a drill/screwdriver, or a pressure washer are examples of objects we’ve acquired through donations or purchased secondhand and make available to our members.

The goal of our project is to encourage the sharing of objects in order to conserve resources, extend the lifespan of goods that have already been produced, and make tools, recreational equipment, cleaning supplies, and kitchenware accessible to people of all income levels.

To take this initiative a step further, we would like to set up a free repair workshop at our location in downtown Lausanne, at 38B Rue Saint-Martin.

Modeled after repair cafés, one person dedicates a weekly time slot to supervising and guiding participants as they repair the broken items they have brought. The idea is to encourage self-reliance, so that everyone is motivated to understand how things work and can take an active role in maintaining them, while combating planned obsolescence.

The funding obtained through the City of Lausanne’s participatory budgeting process will cover the salary of the person in charge of repairs, thereby enabling us to offer a completely free service to the public.

In addition, the repair technician will be responsible for maintaining the items made available by the association, with the goal of ensuring they function optimally for users.

In practice, the free repair workshop will be open to everyone for two hours a week during a drop-in session (one evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., date to be determined).

Designed as a friendly and educational experience, the workshop will also give participants the opportunity to interact with members of La Manivelle Lausanne, the staff, and other organizations based in our shared space, which we share notably with EVAM.
