This proposal was not selected because:

Hello,

Thank you for submitting this suggestion to the suggestion box.

Unfortunately, your proposal has not been selected for the following reasons:

The issue of redesigning the courtyard of the Pontaise community center in Lausanne is an important matter for the safety and well-being of children and the general public. However, there are factors to consider before making significant changes.

First, at the request of a group of residents, it is possible to consider additional tree planting and street furniture, subject to the property owner’s approval.

Second, it is important to note that the courtyard’s current surface is permeable, which allows rainwater to infiltrate the soil effectively. Consequently, paving the courtyard with synthetic material would run counter to current practices that promote soil permeability, which not only reduces the risk of flooding but also improves water quality and biodiversity in urban environments.

Therefore, any proposal for the courtyard’s redesign must take these elements into account to ensure the safety and well-being of children and residents while adhering to current practices in ecology and urban planning.

Pontaise: A More Pleasant Place for Everyone

1. Context:

Pontaise, Lausanne. I run the “Petits Apprentis Sages” playgroup, located in the Pontaise community center. We have a courtyard right out front where children from the playgroup, the APEMS, and the neighborhood center’s various activities can go to play. Beautiful trees and two benches allow people from the neighborhood to rest there.

However, the gravel courtyard is constantly dirty (littered) even though parks and gardens staff come by regularly and do their best.

This level of unsanitary conditions puts children at risk! Children aged 2 to 11 are in this playground every day!

Cigarette butts, small pieces of glass, aluminum can tabs, joints—and so on, the good, the bad, and the ugly.

The children in my care are, in my view, at risk from all the trash they can easily put in their mouths, and it’s difficult for me to go to another playground since I’m alone with 10 young children.

2. Proposal:

My proposal is as follows:

Redesign this courtyard so that it once again becomes a welcoming place for neighborhood residents and the children who gather there every day.

This square is subject to architectural preservation regulations due to the building, but today these regulations no longer reflect reality.

But we could, while respecting the architectural style of the old church, change the flooring in this courtyard. With one section designated for children and residents. A section with tartan flooring, which is safe for children (in case of falls) and easy to clean (cigarette butts, glass, etc.), and benches under the trees to ensure the park’s “appeal.”

Making this park a family-friendly park might encourage people—especially young people—to be more respectful of this place.

--------------------

3. Motivation:

My primary motivation is the well-being of children—both those in childcare centers and those in the neighborhood—so that they can enjoy this extra space!

Beautiful squares with greenery are always a pleasure to experience!
