Hello,

Thank you very much for your contribution to the suggestion box.

Your proposal to install a permanent concrete pump track in Vidy has been carefully reviewed. However, we must inform you that it will not be selected for several reasons.

Since May 2022, the Espace Fair-Play in Vidy has been equipped with a mobile pump track, set up as part of the Year of the Bicycle. This facility is already meeting users’ needs, particularly by relieving congestion at the Vidy bowl and providing infrastructure accessible to everyone, from the youngest to the most experienced. The choice of this mobile infrastructure was made for several reasons:

  • It allows for limited investment while meeting current needs.

  • Its installation requires neither construction work nor a public hearing, unlike a permanent installation.

  • It occupies a limited area, in line with the space constraints in Vidy.

In addition, this mobile infrastructure can be temporarily removed to allow for the organization of events in this area, an essential aspect for ensuring the flexibility of this space’s use. It is also important to note that the Vidy area will undergo significant changes in the coming years with the Coubertin project, which further limits the possibilities for permanent developments.

In 2023, the area was further enhanced with the renovation and expansion of the green ramp, as well as the addition of a street park covering more than 1,000 m² with various modules. These facilities help meet growing demand and accommodate the coexistence of various urban sports such as BMX, skateboarding, scooters, and rollerblading.

Thank you for your suggestion, and we hope you will continue to enjoy the current facilities.

Best regards,

The Suggestion Box Team

Permanent Pumptrack in Vidy

1. Context:

Hello everyone, here’s an idea for a permanent (concrete) pump track in Vidy. Come support this project to help fans of wheeled sports thrive!

--------------------

2. Proposal:

I would like to propose to the City of Lausanne that it build a permanent (concrete) pump track right next to the Vidy bowl.

Having tested various pump tracks (both concrete and temporary), I’ve noticed that it’s harder to ride on temporary pump tracks because they’re very narrow. This leaves very little room for maneuver, making it much “easier” to veer off the track and get hurt. Additionally, the track is slightly elevated above the ground, so you can fall from a certain height. The most challenging sections are the turns, which are very narrow and steep.

In contrast, a concrete pump track is wider and is generally surrounded by dirt and grass that follows the curve of the track and thus remains at the same height as the track itself. This means falls are from a lower height and onto grass. A concrete pump track, being larger, allows for more runs and a greater variety of routes.

There are examples of this type of pump track in Pampigny and Aigle (see images).

--------------------

3. Motivation:

First, a pump track of this type would benefit everyone—young and old, beginners and advanced riders, skaters, cyclists, scooter riders, and more—thanks to its accessibility.

This could then help relieve congestion in the Vidy Bowl on days with high traffic, which, from a safety perspective, would be beneficial (to reduce the risk of collisions, for example).

Then, for those looking for a gentler experience—one that’s different from the tricks and freestyle style typically associated with the bowl—they might find what they’re looking for in the thoroughly satisfying and fun experience offered by pump tracks.

Finally, given how popular these roller sports have become, it’s a shame that residents of the Lausanne region can’t take advantage of such infrastructure even though they live in an Olympic city.
