Your idea has been selected because it aligns with the City’s policy

Given the success of the swimming areas at the Jetée de la Compagnie since 2019 and at the Vieux-Port d’Ouchy since 2021, and to meet growing demand from residents to enjoy Lausanne’s high-quality waters, a third swimming area, in Ouchy, across from the Olympic Museum fountain, has been created. Markings for this area have been completed, and swimmers can now enjoy this new space to cool off in the waters of Lake Geneva. In addition, three temporary establishments have been set up on the lakeshore in Ouchy across from the Olympic fountain, south of the pyramids in Vidy, and finally south of the Vidy Bowl. These locations were awarded to the winners of a public bidding process.

These are trial installations for the 2022 summer season, which must be completely dismantled at the end of this period. If these locations prove satisfactory, a new call for proposals will be issued, and a full building permit and public hearing process will then need to be completed.

Bringing the Ouchy Waterfront Back to Life

The City of Lausanne enjoys a proximity to the lake that many would envy. During the warmer months, aside from the out-of-the-way beaches of Vidy, access to the lake and the appeal of the Ouchy neighborhood’s lakeshore are limited and lackluster. Some outdated establishments satisfy tourists, while others want to stand out—and we encourage them to do so—but the shores feel lifeless when compared to those of other lakeside cities.

Let’s follow the example of Vevey, Nyon, Morges, Neuchâtel, Bern, Evian, and others. Decks, lounge chairs, umbrellas, open-air cafés, and seasonal bars bring the waterfront to life! Everything is in place to make the most of the waterfront, enjoy the breathtaking panoramic views, and bring the riverbanks to life—whether during lunch breaks, after work, or on the weekends.

And when will it be Lausanne’s turn?

The city places great emphasis on the winter season with its Christmas market, which grows year after year and delights the residents of Lausanne. In the summer, the pop-up bars at the Jetée de la Compagnie near Bellerive are packed as soon as the warm weather arrives. A victim of its own success, the space is limited and cannot accommodate all those who love lakeside life.

Enhancing the Quai de Belgique and the Place du Vieux Port all the way to the landing stage could breathe new life into these areas, which are currently lackluster but full of potential. Let’s make the people of Lausanne want to visit these strategic locations again. Let’s offer visitors an experience worthy of a lakeside city and make them want to come back. Deck chairs, a deck area, pop-up bars, and soft music could really make a difference!
