This proposal was selected because:

Hello,

Thank you for your contribution to the Suggestion Box.

Your proposal has been accepted because it is already being implemented using the system you mentioned. However, the City of Lausanne does not have the legal authority to require all businesses to use reusable containers. That is why, since February 2019, we have prioritized a support approach based on raising awareness and collaborating with food service professionals, in partnership with GastroLausanne and reCIRCLE.

To date, 146 establishments have joined the RestoBox project, which allows customers to choose reusable containers for their takeout meals.

The City will continue to support these efforts by increasing the number of distribution points and awareness-raising initiatives, in order to encourage even more restaurant owners to join this sustainable network.

Best regards,

Takeout Sales—Reusable Containers Required

1. Context:

The sale of takeout food and beverages generates a significant amount of waste, particularly non-recyclable waste: it’s time to offer an alternative to restaurants and cafés, as well as to customers.

--------------------

2. Proposal:

The City of Lausanne should make the use of reusable containers mandatory for all takeout food and beverage sales, whether at restaurants, takeout establishments, or bars (no more single-use plastic cups!).

Ideally, these reusable containers should come from the RECIRCLE network, which is used throughout Switzerland (https://www.recircle.ch/fr/). Failing that, the city could simply mandate the use of reusable, location-specific, returnable containers at each point of sale to strongly encourage their return and reuse.

--------------------

3. Motivation:

A comprehensive system would make life easier for everyone—restaurant owners, users, and residents—who would no longer have to put up with the sight of trash strewn haphazardly throughout the streets and parks.
