Bike Station / Secure Bike Parking in the Heart of the City

Avatar: Gregg Rochat Gregg Rochat

1. Background:

Currently, the only safe place to park your bike other than at home is the bike station at the Lausanne train station. To my knowledge, there are no safe parking spots in Flon or at Riponne/Tunnel.

2. Proposal:

My proposal would be to quickly set up a bike station in the city center to allow downtown residents to park and leave their electric bikes (which are too heavy or bulky to store in a basement or apartment every day)
.

3. Motivation:

It would be a hassle for downtown residents to have to go all the way to the train station every day to pick up or store their bikes, especially considering the time it takes to walk or take public transportation (assuming there’s room during rush hour) to retrieve their bikes, while some are lucky enough to have a dedicated parking spot right in front of their building.

The city center is clearly not a safe place to leave your bike out in the open, day or night (risk of theft, vandalism, etc.).

If I may use my own situation as an example, I’ve wanted to buy an e-bike or a cargo bike for a long time, but since I don’t have space at home—and especially since I have to go up and down a flight of stairs— I can’t do so with an electric bike or cargo bike—which is exactly the type of bike I’m looking to buy for my daily needs.

Why not take advantage of the redevelopment of the Riponne to install a bike station or a large bike rack for storing bikes, similar to those in other neighborhoods?

Thank you for considering my suggestion, and I hope other citizens will support this idea.
