Place du Tunnel

Avatar: Antoine Donzel Antoine Donzel

1. Context:

Redesigning the Place du Tunnel, balancing vehicle traffic and pedestrian zones.

--------------------

2. Proposal:

“Rewriting the Place du Tunnel” is a proposal designed to allow businesses to reclaim pedestrian zones and redirect traffic away from building facades. Currently, vehicle traffic lanes occupy a large area and block access from buildings (e.g., cafés and restaurants) to the pedestrian public spaces in both developed areas.

This creates four squares, with the potential to provide outdoor seating areas, while reducing the space allocated to vehicle traffic.

--------------------

3. Motivation:

In line with Lausanne’s policy to reduce traffic-related nuisances and provide more green spaces and pedestrian zones, the idea of moving vehicle traffic away from building facades benefits the public by reducing risks (narrow sidewalks running alongside traffic lanes) and providing public and green spaces right on residents’ doorsteps: a different way of thinking about vehicle traffic.
