Water for People and Birds in Sévelin

Avatar: Maïté Giroud Maïté Giroud

1. Context:

1. The Sévelin neighborhood is undergoing rapid development, and the arrival of the tram will further strengthen this momentum. The formerly industrial neighborhood is now home to schools, housing, businesses, and cultural life.

The redevelopment of public spaces in this very concrete-heavy neighborhood began with speed limits, some street furniture, and, above all, the planting of numerous trees. The beneficial effects of these trees are beginning to be felt: the neighborhood is greener, more pleasant, and less stifling in the summer.

This development could be enhanced by the addition of a water feature, which would make the neighborhood more welcoming and refreshing for both residents and the many people who use the public space during their lunch breaks and throughout the day.

2. Birds need to drink and clean their feathers every day. Aside from trees, there is clearly a lack of water sources in the neighborhood for insects, small wildlife, and birds, especially during heat waves.

2. Proposal:

A water feature in Sévelin: in one of the pedestrian areas between the buildings, the installation of a large fountain or a dynamic water feature. This would allow people to sit around it and enjoy the cool water during their lunch break, provide a place for local children to play, and serve as a watering hole for birds. If a fountain isn’t feasible, could water channels like those in the Flon neighborhood be considered instead?

3. Motivation:

  1. Provide a high-quality public space for the many residents of a rapidly developing neighborhood and enhance its appeal

  2. Provide a cool, refreshing space in a heavily built-up area

  3. Supporting birdlife—especially during heat waves—

  4. Strengthen the identity of the Sévelin neighborhood as an extension of the Flon neighborhood
