This proposal was selected because:

Hello,

Thank you for your contribution to the Suggestion Box. The City of Lausanne places great importance on promoting responsible consumption and supporting local crafts. In this spirit, we have already implemented initiatives aligned with your proposal.

Our “LAUSANNE CONSO DURABLE” platform already offers a directory of places where you can repair and reuse various items, thereby promoting local expertise. In addition, in collaboration with the Fédération romande des consommateurs (FRC), several “repair cafés” are organized in different neighborhoods throughout the city, providing opportunities to highlight the work of local artisans and reduce the environmental impact of consumption.

Your idea is therefore in line with our current initiatives. Although we regularly run poster campaigns to promote these tools, please feel free to spread the word.

Best regards,

The Suggestion Box Team

Crafts and Environmental Commitment

1. Context:

Craftsmanship is in danger. So is our environment. Is it possible to combine the two by creating positive synergies?

Lausanne’s small artisans are the guardians of time-honored craftsmanship. They form a dynamic part of the local economy. However, faced with prohibitive rents and new economic practices, these artisans are struggling to make ends meet.

At the same time, while the City of Lausanne is committed to the environment through many different initiatives, consumer trends are increasingly shifting toward cheap, disposable, and imported goods. As a result, money earned in Switzerland leaves the country to import consumer goods that, paradoxically, we know how to produce ourselves.

2. Proposal:

In this era of energy conservation, it is essential to remind the public that there is a network of artisans who can repair, extend the life of, and transform everyday objects: furniture, clothing, jewelry...

A directory could be created, linked to a contest using the same format as, for example, the Equiwatt program. An incentive program—using poster campaigns and other methods—could encourage people to have old items repaired or refurbished by local artisans rather than buying new ones from China or elsewhere.

And why not create a system of vouchers partially subsidized by the City, valid for repairs or renovations?

3. Motivation:

Such measures will help reduce the environmental impact of consumption while supporting the local economy.

The beneficiaries will, of course, be Lausanne’s artisans.

But also society as a whole, which will rediscover a more sustainable way of consuming, based on high-quality materials and thoughtful actions.

Rather than relying on consumption driven by capital flight to foreign sites such as Wish, Zalando, and others, consumption will be re-rooted in the local community.

This will also provide young people training in the skilled trades with better prospects for the future.

Rather than promoting crafts solely through museums and with a focus on the past, the City of Lausanne will combine tradition with the future.
