This proposal was not selected because:

Hello,

Thank you for your contribution to the suggestion box.

Your proposal raises an important issue regarding energy management. However, regulations governing this type of measure fall under the jurisdiction of cantonal or federal authorities. The City of Lausanne does not have the authority to require businesses to keep their doors closed. However, we take note of your suggestion and will include it in our future awareness-raising efforts with local businesses.

The City is already carrying out several initiatives through its “équiwatt” program, which has saved more than 20 million kWh of heating energy since 2016—the equivalent of the annual consumption of 2,000 households. In 2022, équiwatt distributed CHF 600,000 in grants to help local businesses reduce their energy consumption. Specifically, équiwatt offers small and medium-sized businesses free consulting visits, subsidized energy audits, and a 0% interest loan to finance renovations.

For more information about this program, please visit the official Équiwatt website.

Best regards,

The “Boîte à idées” team.

1. Context:

We are facing an energy shortage that is affecting everyone. There is a potential shortage of city gas for heating this winter

--------------------

2. Proposal:

Require businesses to keep their doors closed throughout the entire municipality (particularly in the downtown pedestrian zones) to prevent energy waste (air conditioning/heating)

Take, for example, Zara, Pkz, and Stradivarius, where you can feel the heat from their full-blast heating systems escaping onto the street... What a waste of energy... just because a closed door doesn’t draw people in.

  • Measures: Commercial Police Regulations + Promotional campaign in the local press

  • Visibility through a “green label” or the imposition of administrative fines.

  • Cost: 0

  • Maximum visibility

  • Strong impact.

--------------------

3. Motivation:

Let’s all do our part for the climate. Let’s take inspiration from other cities (such as Paris) that are committed to climate action and have taken these steps.
