This proposal was not selected because:

Hello,

Thank you for your contribution to the suggestion box.

Your proposal overlaps with initiatives already implemented by the City, and for this reason, it has not been selected.

In fact, we have developed several tools to inform the public about best practices for waste sorting and recycling.

In particular, a page dedicated to waste management is available, offering a practical guide and detailed information on the various collection options, drop-off rules, and the types of waste accepted at each collection point.

In addition, a waste sorting guide is available online, helping residents identify the proper disposal method for each type of waste, and a brochure translated into five languages is also available.

We share your concern regarding raising awareness among new residents and citizens about local waste management rules. To this end, the annual waste collection calendar is distributed to all households in Lausanne in December, providing valuable information on collection dates and sorting guidelines. If you’ve misplaced yours, you can get a new one by contacting Info-déchets at 0800 804 806 (toll-free).

In addition, the Urban Cleanliness Department will have an information booth at the City’s annual meeting with new residents.

In addition, the City provides permanent and mobile recycling centers, as well as recycling stations located throughout the area, offering residents practical solutions for dropping off and recycling their waste.

Finally, every year a communication campaign on a waste management topic is launched, featuring videos on social media, SGA posters, and a two-day booth in a downtown square.

Feel free to share these resources with others to raise awareness among as many people as possible about best practices in waste management.

Waste Management Guide for a Cleaner Environment in Lausanne

1. Context:

In Lausanne, we have a well-organized waste management system, featuring a “mobile recycling center” and widely distributed recycling collection points. In addition, residents are required to use official bags to dispose of their household waste. However, it is still common to see unofficial bags in trash cans, bulky items left on street corners, or bags of recyclables abandoned next to trash cans not designated for those materials. While some residents may deliberately ignore the rules, many others—especially newcomers—may simply be unaware of these procedures and services.

2. Proposal:

I propose creating a simple, concise, and accessible information page (A4) dedicated to waste management rules and collection services in Lausanne. This page would include:

  • An explanation of the various waste management options: official bags, mobile waste collection sites, recycling points, etc.

  • A reminder of the rules for disposing of waste in public spaces.

  • Information on the types of waste accepted at each collection point and how the mobile waste collection service works.

  • Practical tips for finding collection points and avoiding the most common mistakes.

This page could be shared on social media, posted at key locations (neighborhood information boards, bus shelters, etc.), and printed in a compact format to be placed near non-compliant dumping sites as a reminder. Citizens would also have the option to download or share this page to remind those around them of the rules in a constructive way.

3. Motivation:

It is important for the City of Lausanne to adopt this proposal in order to raise awareness among more citizens about local waste management rules, particularly targeting new residents who are not always familiar with the city’s specific recycling and sorting procedures. The direct beneficiaries would be the residents of Lausanne, who would enjoy a cleaner environment, as well as public sanitation services, whose work would be made easier. This initiative would thus help improve everyone’s quality of life and strengthen the sense of shared respect and responsibility within our community.
