This proposal was not selected because:

Hello,

Thank you very much for your contribution to the Suggestion Box.

Your proposal to install electric bike charging stations at strategic locations in Lausanne has been carefully reviewed.

However, this proposal was not selected. In fact, a study conducted with EPFL showed that the vast majority of people who use electric bikes charge them primarily at home or at work, at most once a day. This makes the installation of public charging stations less practical. Furthermore, there are technical issues, particularly regarding the variety of chargers and adapters required, which would force users to carry their own equipment, thereby complicating access for everyone. Finally, installing these stations in public spaces would require major construction work, limiting flexibility for potential future redevelopment projects.

Thank you for your understanding and your commitment,

Electric Bike Charging Stations at Strategic Locations in Lausanne

1. Background:

Lausanne is a city where bicycle use—including electric bicycles—is constantly on the rise. With its hilly terrain, electric bicycles are becoming an increasingly popular alternative for daily commutes. However, the lack of charging infrastructure can limit their use, especially for people traveling long distances. By encouraging the use of e-bikes, Lausanne can reduce traffic congestion and CO2 emissions and promote more sustainable mobility.

2. Proposal:

My proposal is to install charging stations for electric bikes at key locations in Lausanne. This program would include:

  • Installation of Charging Stations: Simple and accessible charging stations would be installed in strategic locations such as train stations, parks, shopping centers, and major intersections. These stations would be equipped with universal outlets to accommodate different models of electric bikes.

  • Accessibility and Free Use: To encourage rapid adoption, charging stations could be free or low-cost for users, with a limited charging time to allow for quick turnover.

  • Promotion and Awareness: The city could launch a public awareness campaign to inform residents about the availability of these stations, encourage the use of electric bikes, and promote the health and environmental benefits of this mode of transportation.

3. Motivation:

This proposal is simple, inexpensive, and can be implemented quickly. By providing charging stations for electric bikes, Lausanne would promote the use of this sustainable mode of transportation and relieve pressure on road infrastructure. The beneficiaries would be cyclists, who would enjoy greater range, and the city itself, which would see a reduction in car traffic and greenhouse gas emissions. Positive results would be quickly apparent, reinforcing Lausanne’s reputation as a city committed to green mobility.
