Stories from Here and Elsewhere

Avatar: Kudy Kudy

Your Project

  • Stories from Here and There

  • This project aims to offer children and their parents storytelling sessions led by professionals at the Prélaz-Valency socio-cultural center one Wednesday per month.

Project Partners

  • This project is organized by the Prélaz-Valency neighborhood association

  • Prélaz-Valency Socio-Cultural Center

Summary of Your Project

Describe your project in a few lines, indicating the context in which it fits (are there any issues or opportunities driving your initiative?) and when it will be implemented. An appendix may be attached to this proposal (additional descriptions, detailed timeline and budget, sketches, references, etc.).

  • “Stories from Here and Elsewhere” is a project that has been running for a year and a half now. Children and their parents turn out every time this event is offered. These storytelling sessions take place at the Prélaz-Valency Socio-Cultural Center one Wednesday a month at 3:00 p.m. This project was born out of a desire to offer all children a chance to enjoy stories and thus helps reduce inequality of opportunity in the working-class neighborhood of Prélaz-Valency. “Stories from Here and Elsewhere” thus contributes, in its own small way, to reducing social inequalities through storytelling.

  • "Tales from Here and There" takes place at the Prélaz-Valency Socio-Cultural Center

  • This project is aimed at children ages 5 and up, as well as their parents.

  • “Tales from Here and Elsewhere” takes place once a month, on Wednesdays at 3:00 p.m., from January through December.

  • This project is particularly meaningful in the Prélaz-Valency neighborhood because it is a working-class neighborhood where families do not necessarily have the means to provide opportunities for children to hear stories told by professionals. That is why this event is free, so that all families can enjoy these storytelling experiences. However, the professional storytellers are paid. Why use professionals in this case? As a professional educator, I’ve observed that it can be difficult for some children to immerse themselves in stories and the world of imagination. Not all children are on the same level in this regard. That is why I believe it is necessary to bring in experienced professionals. Just as being an educator is a profession that requires skill, storytelling also requires skill to be able to draw all children into the world of stories.

Your Request

Maximum amount awarded: CHF 3,000

  • A storyteller generally charges between 350 and 500 francs. Given the limited resources available to the Prélaz-Valency neighborhood association, I was able to reach a compromise with each of the storytellers who came to the “Stories from Here and Elsewhere” event. We agreed on a fee of 350 francs for a 30-minute performance. A longer performance would be too difficult for children who aren’t used to storytelling.

  • Total budget: 300 × 12 = 3,600.

Documents to Include with Your Application

  • The Prélaz-Valency neighborhood association works on behalf of the FASL. The members of the committee, of which I am a part, are all volunteers. We work at the Prélaz-Valency socio-cultural center in collaboration with the center’s staff. The center is located at Ch. de Renens 12C, 1004 Lausanne.

  • “Tales from Here and Elsewhere” has been running since 2021. At the end of December 2022, the program will come to an end because we no longer have funding, which is why we’re submitting this application. We’d like to continue this project in 2023 because it appears to meet a need in the neighborhood. In fact, between 15 and 60 people attend these storytelling sessions. There is clearly an audience for this. That is why we believe it is important for this project to continue next year.

  • The amount of 3,000 francs would allow us to offer a few dates next year, even though the project’s budget is 3,600 francs.

  • So far, the number of people attending these storytelling sessions has been the key indicator of the project’s success. Furthermore, the demand from the children confirms that this project is meaningful to the Prélaz-Valency neighborhood.
