Flavors of the World

Avatar: Biriba's Capoeira Biriba's Capoeira

Short Description
The “Saveurs du Monde” project is a cultural immersion program designed to allow children ages 5 to 13 to experience the richness of different cultures through their history, art, and cuisine. This five-day educational program will take place for the first time during the Easter break in 2025, in a space rented by the Biriba’s Capoeira association in Prélaz, a neighborhood with great cultural diversity. Families living there often face socioeconomic challenges that do not always allow their children to participate in paid activities. The project aims to address this situation and create a dynamic and interactive learning environment where curiosity and mutual respect are encouraged and at the heart of every activity.

Your project in detail
"Saveurs du Monde" is a unique educational initiative. The project offers children a deep immersion in Brazil’s cultural diversity, which stems from a rich blend of cultures. Through a series of educational and fun activities, the project aims to build bridges between young people from diverse backgrounds, explore the intersection of cultures and the resulting innovations, to foster mutual understanding, and to promote respect for diversity as a source of richness and innovation. The activities are designed to be both informative and interactive. They include cooking workshops where children learn to prepare typical regional dishes, dance and music sessions to explore various artistic expressions and their influences, as well as visual arts workshops inspired by the history and motifs of the regions and influences being studied. The goal is to create a deeply immersive experience by fully engaging the children’s senses. By tasting the cuisine of other cultures, learning dance steps, or listening to stories and music from various regions, participants physically—and therefore memorably—experience cultural fusion. When a culture transcends the borders of one country and finds its place in another, it gives rise to new forms of integration and socialization. Particular emphasis is placed on children’s interaction and participation in the learning process. The workshops are designed to be spaces for free expression where children can ask questions, share their own experiences and reflections, and thus contribute to an enriching dialogue. Exploring different cultures aims to encourage children’s natural curiosity and motivate them to learn and take an interest in one another, in a spirit of fraternity/sorority and mutual respect for differences, viewed as a treasure to be shared. Educational games and cultural quizzes are planned to make learning fun and encourage active participation. “Flavors of the World” aspires to be more than just a week of discovery: it is intended to be a journey of self-discovery at the heart of cultural exchange, cultural fusion, and the resulting influences and innovations. By emphasizing exchange, active learning, and discovery, the project aims to cultivate in young participants a global awareness and open-mindedness that will stay with them throughout their lives. “Flavors of the World” can be considered innovative in its comprehensive approach to cultural and social education, particularly due to its use of gastronomy as a vehicle for learning and engagement, complementing other activities. Although similar initiatives may have existed in Switzerland, the specific details of the project—such as its target audience, methodologies, and objectives—contribute to its innovative nature. Its multidisciplinary nature (combining cultural, historical, artistic, and gastronomic elements to create a rich and varied educational program) Furthermore, the project’s format offers a deeply immersive experience in different cultures—something rarely achieved in traditional educational formats or one-off workshops. We rely on the expertise of our educators and our association’s 12 years of experience organizing cultural events, as well as the professionalism of the instructors who lead the workshops. The “Saveurs du Monde” team includes educators, artists, and chefs who specialize in the cultural traditions they represent, thus ensuring the authenticity and quality of the experiences offered. By collaborating with professionals passionate about cultural exchange, the project ensures that each workshop is a window onto the world, offering new and enriching perspectives. Our team of volunteers, along with those from our partner organizations, will work with us throughout the week. This inaugural edition will eventually allow us to include and build a network of parents who might be interested in actively participating in the culinary activities during future editions. To assess the project’s impact, we will conduct detailed satisfaction surveys of children and parents, enabling a qualitative and quantitative analysis of their experience. These surveys will focus on specific aspects such as understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity and engagement in the activities. We will also assess the children’s satisfaction at the end of each session regarding the activities, using a fun and quick methodology: they will be able to choose a small smiley face (happy, neutral, or sad) to express whether they enjoyed the day’s activities. We will provide a space for them to share their thoughts so they can express themselves and suggest new ideas, if applicable.
