The Participatory Budget in Detail
The Participatory Budget is an initiative launched in 2019 that encourages the development of neighborhood projects and gives residents the opportunity to decide how the City’s financial resources are allocated using a budget provided by the Municipality (CHF 100,000 in 2019, CHF 150,000 in 2020, and now CHF 175,000). Projects must be proposed by groups of at least three people living in Lausanne. Funding for projects is not allocated through political decisions or strategic choices but by the residents of Lausanne. Residents are invited to vote for their favorite projects. The projects that receive the most votes are then carried out by the winners themselves.

Do you have an idea for a project to improve your neighborhood? Review the guidelines, team up with at least two residents, and submit your project on this platform.
Your project will be reviewed by the relevant City departments to ensure it meets technical and legal requirements.
If your project meets the requirements, it moves on to the voting and promotion phase! Lausanne residents will vote for their favorite projects (at least 3).
The projects that receive the most votes will be funded. All that’s left is for you to sign the agreement with the City and begin implementing your project!
How do I submit a project?
To submit a project, simply fill out the form and provide the budget as requested on this platform. You do not need to be part of an organization to submit a project, but you must partner with at least two other residents. Children can also submit a project. You’ll need to find 10 sponsors who support your project by collecting signatures. Their commitment is purely moral; it does not obligate them financially or require them to be involved in the project. It simply shows that they find your project interesting.
What happens during the feasibility study?
Once you have submitted your project, the City must ensure that it is technically and legally feasible. Each City department therefore verifies its compliance. This objective analysis ensures that only projects that are actually feasible are put to a vote.
So how does the vote work?
Vote and encourage others to vote for projects
For a project to be implemented, it must have democratically obtained a majority of votes. You have three options for voting: online on the Participatory Budget website, by paper ballot in one of the ballot boxes located throughout Lausanne, or by mail by returning your ballot via the postal service.
If you’ve submitted a project and it has successfully passed the previous stages, it’s time to campaign so that it can gather enough votes to be among the lucky winners!
How to Vote?
You must vote for at least 3 projects (no maximum). There are three ways to vote:
