A participatory process is a sequence of participatory activities (for example, first filling out a survey, then making proposals, discussing them in person or online, and finally prioritizing them) with the goal of defining and making a decision on a specific topic.

Examples of participatory processes: a process for electing committee members (where candidates are first nominated, then debated, and finally one candidate is selected), participatory budgeting (where proposals are submitted, evaluated from a financial perspective, and voted on based on available funds), a strategic planning process, the collaborative drafting of a regulation or standard, the design of an urban space, or the development of a public policy plan.

#Jeune, VivreEnsemble, Urbanisme Lausanne Gives Children a Voice

About this participatory initiative

A great many children are growing up in Lausanne. The city is their playground, a place for them to thrive, meet others, and learn. They are shaped by the experiences they have there, and they ask themselves many questions.

For the past 18 years, the Pousses Urbaines project has aimed to present to the general public and policymakers the realities experienced by children in the city, regardless of their social or cultural backgrounds, the neighborhoods where they live, or their ages.

Theme 2025/2026: Budding Journalists—Kids Take the Lead in Investigating!

In 2007, the Pousses Urbaines project explored whether the city could be a source of well-being for children… This year, Pousses Urbaines examined the place of children in the city. Might they, too, be an asset to the city? When urban spaces are not suitable for the youngest residents, can they meet the needs of adults?

Having become apprentice journalists, the children conducted investigations and interviews about their relationship to public spaces.

The results of this initiative will be celebrated during a festive day on Wednesday, May 6, in the Cité neighborhood. On the program: a lively, joyful musical performance, punctuated by social gatherings.
