1. The project in a nutshell

Bringing together residents from different neighborhoods to build a trailer-mounted bread oven and then use it as a mobile oven at various locations throughout the city.

2. The Project’s Objective

An initiative to bring people together around an essential, creative, and hands-on activity. A way to build bridges between generations and cultures. An invitation to roll up your sleeves and share your best recipes. A way to bring different neighborhoods in Lausanne to life.

3. The Project in Detail

The “Sunday Bakers” project will unfold in two phases. First, a participatory workshop will be set up to build the oven. During this phase, volunteers will be able to participate in the various stages of constructing an oven made of clay, sand, and straw, under the guidance of specialists in cob construction. Once built, the oven will be managed by the project leaders, who will be responsible for transporting the oven and lighting it once a month in different neighborhoods throughout the city. Residents will then be able to come and bake their bread, pies, or other baked goods while enjoying the sense of community that this creates. The various potential locations for these community events will be open, central, and easily accessible—such as parks, town squares, community centers, and so on.

4. The amount requested to carry out the project

17,000 CHF

• Communication (website, printing of flyers): 1,250 CHF

• Operating costs (trailer, clay soil, firewood, etc.): 9,750 CHF

• External specialist consultation (advice, soil analysis, 5-step self-build guidance, kiln commissioning, 60 hours): 5,000 CHF

• Tools: 1,000 CHF
