1. The project in a nutshell

In light of the latest IPCC report from October 2018 and our heatwave-ridden summers of 2017 and 2018, Given the high quality of life and the welcoming atmosphere of our neighborhood, we, the residents of Fiches Nord, would like to help cool our neighborhood by planting trees in the fall of 2019, then in 2020, and then in 2021, for future generations.

2. The Project’s Objective

We want to improve the quality of life in our neighborhood during heat waves through an initiative where every resident can easily participate while forging new connections with their neighbors. We also want to bring more green spaces, biodiversity, and environmental sustainability to our neighborhood.

3. The Project in Detail

The goal of our project is to have residents, children, and people of all ages and backgrounds plant trees. The plan is to plant so-called “pioneer” trees—that is, trees capable of growing quickly, native to the area, adapted to climate change, and with a high cooling capacity. For example, aspens, willows, wild cherries, etc. These trees would be planted as saplings to make planting easier for children and older adults and to ensure healthy growth, with the goal of reaching maturity in 20 to 30 years. Parents and grandparents would be encouraged to accompany their children and grandchildren during three participatory tree-planting days (one each year). A sponsorship program for each tree would be organized, with the goal of fostering a greater sense of ownership of our community.
