2. The Project’s Objective

Through the object library, we hope to: - Reduce the environmental impact of our consumption. Indeed, the overconsumption of objects and devices is a major source of pollution due to the amount of resources and energy required to produce them. Having access to an item used only occasionally rather than owning it is a good way to reduce the environmental impact of producing new items. Encouraging the sharing and repair of devices rather than the purchase of new items also prompts us to reflect on our consumption patterns, which are often harmful to the planet. Furthermore, this helps slow down waste generation and, consequently, waste treatment and disposal—processes that are often a source of pollution and costly for local governments. - Building community ties. If the space housing the library allows it, we’d like to eventually organize themed workshops to teach people how to use tools and encourage creative projects (woodworking, sewing, metalwork, etc.). We’re also planning to host Repair Cafés and other workshops, such as those for making homemade household products and cosmetics, or clothing swaps. These activities will allow members to meet, exchange ideas, pool their skills, and strengthen civic initiative.

3. The Project in Detail

La Manivelle operates like a library, but instead of borrowing books, you borrow objects. It will be a nonprofit association or cooperative, with a particular focus on the values of sharing, self-reliance, and resource conservation. The desire to establish an object library stems from the following premise: - There’s no need to individually purchase and maintain tools and other items that we use only a few times a year (a drill is used an average of 16 minutes per year per household!) - We lack space in our apartments to store tools - It’s much cheaper! - We limit the unnecessary consumption of new items, thereby helping to conserve resources and the energy required for their production while using the items to their full potential.
