What is a summer heat wave?

With climate change, cities are becoming increasingly hot, which has consequences for the health and thermal comfort of their residents.

The City of Lausanne must also adapt to these new challenges. This adaptation can be achieved by implementing cooling measures that provide shelter during heat waves in the summer (such as plants that provide shade) or by removing asphalt and replacing it with lighter-colored materials that allow water to infiltrate.

Why Place des Saugettes?

This square regularly gets very hot during the summer. In fact, it already hosted a Climate Pavilion during the summer of 2023. Following that, the square’s users expressed a desire to repeat the experience of having a cool space there. Finally, with the train station area undergoing changes, this presents an opportunity to implement temporary and innovative improvements.
